Study of the Anterior Lens Capsule Epithelial Cells In Human Cataract

Abstract
|
|
|
Twenty anterior capsule specimens from 18 patients with unilateral or bilateral cataract were obtained by continuous circular capsulerhexis and were studied for epithelial cell density by image analyzer.
Mean epithelial cell number was 4944.55 cells /mm2. Three groups were arbitrarily divided by number of epithelial cells as followings : Group 1 <200 cells /58906,?m2, Group 2 ?200 cells or <300 cells /58906, ?m2, Group 3?300 cells /58906?m2. Group 1 had mean cells count. of 2538. 34 cells /mm2 Group 2 had 4129.05 cells /mm2 and Group 3 had 6648.26 cells /mm2, Number of epithelial cells was in proportion of patients´ age. Cases with posterior sub capsular cataract accounted for 2 /3 of Group 3, suggesting that types of cataract were related to epithelial cell density. These results represent that either degenerative or regenerating activity of lens epithelium is involved in development of cataract.
